You can choose whether to use AI or not for your Google search results. Popular Science Composite
Google’s products are awash with AI. Google announced at its Google I/O event in 2024 that AI will be featured more prominently on search results. This is powered by a search-specific version the Gemini AI Model.
Google has been testing AI search results for several months now, but only with a small group of users. These features will soon be available to all users in the US. You’ll get an AI-generated response to certain queries before you click any links.
You might, for instance, want to know where to take your kids to Yosemite National Park. You may see some AI-generated suggestions before you visit any travel websites. (Google’s AI has already crawled the web and analyzed it to find its answers, but Gemini is not a Yosemite native or a parent of children).
You may not want to be fooled by an AI illusion. Perhaps you are concerned about AI’s direction or you simply don’t like the AI slop that is now all over the internet. You can switch to a search experience that is AI-free.

Google’s search engine has added a Web tab at the same time that it introduced these new AI features. You can find it by clicking the “Web Tab” after you have run a query. You can find out more about us by clicking here. Tab at the top and then choose Web. The traditional link list will be displayed, but no chatbot responses are included.
You can set this type of search as your default to save yourself from having to switch tabs manually every time. Google Chrome:

You can also use a search engine other than Google. Microsoft Bing is perhaps the most popular alternative, but it has a lot of AI features, making it less suitable for simple web searches.

DuckDuckGo is a clean, private search engine. You can set it up as your default browser by clicking the button on its front page. You won’t have your searches tracked and the ads on the results pages aren’t particularly annoying or intrusive.
Ecosia is another search engine that we think is worth checking out. Ecosia uses advertising revenue to protect ecosystems and plant trees around the world. It’s also very easy to use. Like DuckDuckGo there is no tracking of users and the results are displayed in a simple and clear manner.
Brave Search follows the same principles of privacy and simplicity as the two other search engines we have mentioned. You can type in your search term and get an organized list of results. (There’s even a section dedicated to Reddit discussions – which is very handy.) Brave Search has an AI button. However, you will not see any AI responses unless you click it.
